The Birth of Handwovenlamp
On a golden evening in Venice, young designer Xu Wanqing stood mesmerized by sunlight filtering through centuries-old stained glass, painting the ancient walls with living art. In that moment, she realized light could be more than illumination—it could tell stories, evoke emotions, transform spaces.
Returning to Shanghai, Xu quit her stable design job and founded a new lighting brand ‘Handwovenlamp’ despite her friends’ warnings. "Handwovenlamp won't just make lamps," she insisted, "we'll create collectible light art for those who understand the dialogue between light and space."
Reality hit hard. Her handmade prototypes gathered dust at design markets. Investors withdrew. A leaking roof destroyed three painstakingly crafted chandeliers. Sitting amidst the waterlogged ruins of her studio, Xu nearly gave up.
Salvation came in a quirky café where industrial pipes met traditional Chinese elements—and where owner Tom recognized Xu's talent. Over coffee, he became Handwovenlamp's first client, commissioning custom lights that would make his café glow with "the warmth of sunset through Venetian glass."
When the installation debuted, patrons lingered longer, instinctively taking photos beneath lights that cast storytelling shadows. Online buzz grew. A famous architect inquired.
Xu finally saw her vision materialize—not as mass-produced products, but as limited edition "light sculptures" where every piece bore her signature and origin story. Handwovenlamp had found its light.
